Using Art as an Engine for Community Involvement and Social Change

Rachael's Women's Center and Edmund Burke School

A Holiday Ornament Collaboration

In November of 2003, The Gary Rosenthal Collection trained four Rachael's Women's Center clients to create fused glass ornaments for the holidays. Once they were comfortable in the procedure, these four women became the teachers in a community-building activity for the tenth-grade students of Edmund Burke School and their families.

Together, the group created 200 ornaments, 186 of which sold for $20 each in less than a week to Friends of Rachael's. Based on that success, Rachael's purchased the supplies for 250 more ornaments.
